Retroperitoneal Tertoma

Abstract
A variety of tumors arisen independently in the retroperitoneal space unattached to any matured organs are known as primary retroperitoneal tumors and the number of cases recorded in the literatures has been constantly increased.
The history, incidence, pathological features, clinical symptoms and signs, diagnosis, treatment, course and prognosis of retroperitoneal tumors, more pertinently teratoma in childhood, are reviewed referring to literatures and a study of 4 cases. The 4 cases included in this report represent the experience of the Severance Hospital at Seoul, Korea, from June 1959 to June 1961.
In our series the youngest patient was a 27 months old infant. The tumors were all predominantly benign. An accidental abdominal mass without any specific complaints heralded the onset of disease. A simple flat plate of abdomen and I.V.P. were available for diagnosis.
Among our cases was one of benign teratoma which encroached and destructed the spinal column which ensued kyphoscoliosis. Unhappily the patient had been managed under misdiagnosis of the tuberculous spine that should be differentiated. He was recovered well after extirpation of the mass and laminectomy of the spine.
The successful treatment of choice is depend upon early operative intervention without further delay as soon as a mass is shown to lie in the retroperitoneal space. Radiotherapy postoperatively is debatable for its definite value. The effect of Thio-tepa used in one case is unpredictable yet.
